Manouvering vessels in today’s confines of a busy harbour, or marina can challenge even a skilled crew. Cross winds and tides can be difficult to overcome with conventional propulsion, and steering gear, particularly when “stern to mooring” which is becoming a more common practice around the World. Lewmar Thrusters can help provide additional control just when you need it at the touch of a button, or move of a joystick. Lewmar have a range of well proven thrusters which suit sail or power vessels from below 30 – 150ft.

A bow thruster or stern thruster is a transversal propulsion device built into, or mounted to, either the bow or stern, of a ship or boat, to make it more manoeuvrable. Bow thrusters make docking easier, since they allow the captain to turn the vessel to port or starboard side, without using the main propulsion mechanism which requires some forward motion for turning;[1] indeed, the effectiveness of a thruster is curtailed by any forward motion due to the Coandă effect. A stern thruster is of the same principle, fitted at the stern. Large ships might have multiple bow thrusters and stern thrusters.
